Pressing a slat panel onto a wall

From bare wall to feature wall

Five simple steps, one afternoon. Read them once before you start — the full guide is below.

Installation Guide

Most slat walls take an afternoon. You'll need a tape measure, a pencil, a level, a sharp utility knife and a fine-tooth saw — or our Precision Trim Tool Set.

1. Prepare the wall

The wall should be clean, dry, smooth and sound. Remove dust and grease, fill holes and let fresh paint cure for at least 7 days. Let the panels rest flat in the room for 24 hours before installing.

2. Measure and plan

Measure the wall's width and height. Each panel is 106 × 43 in (about 32 sq ft). Decide where the first panel goes — starting from the most visible corner or the center of the wall usually looks best. Mark a vertical guide line with a level.

3. Trim to size

To shorten a panel, cut across the slats with a fine-tooth saw, then slice the felt with a utility knife along a straight edge. To narrow a panel, cut along the felt between two slats. Measure twice around outlets and windows, and turn off power before working near outlets.

4. Peel, position and press

Peel the backing, align the first panel with your guide line and press firmly from top to bottom. On textured or painted walls, add mounting tape for extra hold. Place the next panel tight against the first so the slat spacing stays even.

5. Finish

Press every panel once more with a hand roller or a clean cloth. Add an LED strip along the top or bottom for a warm glow.
